Register for Training & CEUsSubstance Abuse Subtle Screening Inventory training is for all human service professionals interested in learning critical information about the SASSI 4 and how it should be used and interpreted. You will learn about its administration, individual scale meanings, interpretation of profile configurations, and how to provide non-threatening feedback to clients regarding their SASSI profile.
The Bellevue University SUDTE program is approved by NAADAC, the Association for Addiction Professionals. This important recognition means that the contact hours or CEUs earned will be accepted toward national credentialing by the NAADAC Certification Commission.

In the Administration & Scoring training participants will learn how the SASSI was developed, how it should be used, administration & scoring protocols for both the adult (SASSI-4) and the adolescent (SASSI-A2) questionnaires, and will be introduced to the individual scales. Participants will have opportunities to practice scoring, using the decision rules, and determining if a client may have a mild, moderate, or severe substance use disorder. Participant requirements: This training is open to all human service professionals and no prior experience with the SASSI required.
In the Clinical Interpretation training you will learn the clinical use of the SASSI scales, screening and assessment information, developing the clinical interview, treatment planning issues, and how to give feedback to the client. Using numerous profile examples and small group discussion, participants will learn how to differentiate between consistent and inconsistent data given by a client. Participant requirements: This training is open to all human service professionals. Participants who attend this workshop should be familiar with the administration & scoring of the SASSI.
Note: A minimum of five (5) participants is required and Bellevue University reserves the right to cancel a course with insufficient enrollment, in which case refunds will be given.
Prerequisites: We suggest that the Administration and Scoring workshop is taken first but it is not a requirement.

William Ricketts, M.S., LMHP
William Ricketts, M.S, LMHP, is a professor, senior faculty and internship coordinator for Iowa Western’s Human Services Programs. He has been teaching human services, counseling, and addictions-related courses for the past thirty-two years, and as an adjunct professor in Bellevue University’s Behavioral Sciences Human Service program for the past six years. Professor Ricketts has been a National Training Consultant for the SASSI Institute, a drug and alcohol research company in Springville, IN, since 1991, providing SASSI certification trainings across the United States. As a clinical family therapist, educator and community volunteer, Professor Ricketts has worked extensively in the human services and counseling fields.

Jack Nelson received his Master’s in Public Administration (MPA) from the University of Nebraska – Omaha with a focus on nonprofit management and an undergraduate degree in Business/Vocational Education from the University of Northern Iowa. Nelson has over 30 years of experience working and teaching in nonprofit organizations including in childcare, healthcare, and education. He has been an adjunct professor for Bellevue University in the College of Arts and Sciences since 2005 and also teaches in the College of Business undergraduate Nonprofit Management program.
Currently, Nelson is the Program Manager who oversees contracts and special programs within the Community of Practice focused on behavioral health in Bellevue University Continuing Education. Other experiences that provided a foundation for his career include roles as an Organizational Development Consultant for a regional healthcare organization, a Director of Programs for a childcare agency and as Program Consultant working with small and medium nonprofit childcare organizations focused on program development.
